Justice Maulana Mufti Muhammad Taki Usmani (born 1943 in Deoband, Saharanpur District, Uttar Pradesh, India) is a prominent Islamic figure in Pakistan. He specializes in Hadith, Islamic Fiqh, Tasawwuf and Economics. He is currently one of the most active figures in Islamic economics. He was a judge of the Central Shariah Court of Pakistan from 1980 to 1982 and the Shariah Appeal Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan from 1982 to 2002. He is the son of Mufti Shafi Usmani, the author of the famous commentary “Maariful Qur’an”. He is currently teaching Sahih Bukhari, Fiqh and Islamic Economics at Darul Uloom Karachi.

His primary education started with his mother in the family. He received his early education in Urdu and Persian from his mother. In 1953, at the age of eight, he was admitted to Darul Uloom Karachi. In 1959, he completed Daura Hadith, the highest level of Darse Neyami syllabus from this institution. He passed the central examination of Daura Hadith with the best marks of all time. He then received a higher education in Islamic jurisprudence under the tutelage of his father, Mufti Shafi Usmani. In 1961, he completed his Takhassus (equivalent to a Ph.D.) degree in Fiqh and Fatwa from Darul Uloom Karachi. He passed B.Com in Economics and Political Science from Karachi University in 1984 and LLB from the same university in 1980. He also holds an MA in Arabic Language and Literature from Punjab University. He obtained permission from Shaykh Hasan Mashat, Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani, Maulana Idris Kandalvi, Mufti Rashid Ahmad Ludhianvi and Shaykhul Hadith Muhammad Zakaria Kandhalvi to narrate hadith.
He has been teaching at Darul Uloom Karachi since the completion of Daora Hadith in 1959. From 1972 to May 2002, he was a judge of the Sharia Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He was the first to introduce Islamic banking in Pakistan through the establishment of “Mizan Bank”. Every Sunday, he recites tazkiyah or self-purification at the Darul Uloom Madrasa in Karachi. He was one of the leading scholars in declaring the Qadianis to be non-Muslims by the Pakistan National Assembly under President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1970.

During the rule of General Ziaul Huq, he played a leading role in the enactment of laws relating to hadd, qisas and diyat. He has been the editor-in-chief of the Urdu monthly Al-Balag since 1986 and the English monthly Al-Balag International since 1990. He has written many articles on Islamic banking and economics in various journals and periodicals. He has written more than 80 books in Arabic, English and Urdu. His books have been translated into about 70 languages of the world including Bengali.
He was and still is in charge of various organizations and institutions at home and abroad. Among them are Shaykhul Hadith and Naib Muhtamim of Darul Uloom Karachi, Chairman, International Standards Shariah Council, Islamic Economic Accounting and Inspection Agency, Bahrain, Permanent Member, International Fiqh Academy, Jeddah (OIC affiliate), Chairmen, Pakistan (since 1991), a permanent member of the Taki Usmani International Fiqh Academy (a branch of the OIC). He was also the Vice Chairman of the International Academy of Fiqh for 9 years. .

In March 2004, Maulana Taqi Usmani was honored by the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates at the International Islamic Finance Forum (IIFF) Annual Ceremony in Dubai for his contribution to Islamic economics.
